2017 Music List

2018-01-22

This year primarily focuses on artists I've been following for years. It's okay, I'm getting old! That's what happens. No one wants to be the old fart at a concert surrounded by teeny boppers. Well, unless you're running for Senate in Alabama. Haha, that joke will totally make sense in 5 years when someone googles this randomly.

Anyway, the top of my list is Old 97s’ Graveyard Whistling, mainly because I finally got to see them live this year (thanks Dave!) and they played a great mix of songs (primarily the new one and the classic Too Far to Care). It's easily the most played 2017 album. For me. I have no idea what you listen to.

Son Volt, Spoon, Grizzly Bear, Dr. Dog, Josh Ritter, and the Shins all put out excellent albums this year. You should listen to them. If you don't know who any of them are, I'm not sure how we're friends. Although I suppose this is a public site, so we might not even know each other. I still say you should listen to me telling you to listen to them.

In a bit of a change of pace, I've got some Bach and hip hop, but not together because some things don't make sense. I listen to Chris Thile's many bands all the time, including other collaborations he has with the other two artists here (Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer). Amazing musicians and fun to watch (you can find clips easily enough on youtube).

The hippity hopper is Logic. I suppose it helps he's a bit geeky and had a cameo on Rick and Morty. Anyway, aside from 90s acts who have released albums in the past year he's the lone new act I've heard.

And speaking of 90s acts, Prophets of Rage is a Trump-induced musical rage collaboration between most of Rage Against the Machine, Public Enemy, and Cypress Hill. They're rightfully pissed off, but also include a song about weed cuz, well, Cypress Hill (albeit they made it political).

The Full List

As usual, I host the full itemized list on WetzNet. It also includes my ratings (and short reviews if you click through for a given album).

Missing Mentionables

There were a few albums I haven't had a chance to check out yet. New ones by Beck, Wolf Alice, Living Colour, Iron & Wine, Ben Ottewell, Fleet Foxes, and Dan Aurbach are on my list. Some day. If you're curious about what you (or I) may have missed, you can go to the all albums page on WetzNet and filter on 2017. Or really search with any term you might like.
